Christmas Book Advent

We showed you some of our favourite Christmas Advent calendars for the holiday season last week (see here) but now we thought we would tell you a little about another great Advent idea we came across a couple of years ago.

If you have mini bookworms in your household and adore collecting books for the family, then why not try this idea… A Christmas Book Advent. A new Christmas/holiday related book for each day of the Advent – so you could do the 24 or alternatively the 12 days before Christmas. Whichever way you do it, it is such a lovely way to get the whole family excited about the upcoming festivities.

We know the costs at this time of year can add up dramatically, so don’t forget you can always seek out books from charity shops or on eBay, and Amazon also sell second hand books in various states of wear.

Here are a few of our favourite Christmas books to get you started…

Snow sam usher

Snow by Sam Usher – join and a little boy and his grandad on their extraordinary snow day. A very simple book (so one for the younger readers) but beautifully illustrated and told by the boy. No doubt it will get your little ones excited about the prospect of snow this year.

mr willowbys tree

Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree by Robert Barry – Mr Willowy’s Christmas tree was the biggest he had ever seen. Follow this delightful journey of the top of the Christmas tree as it moves from home to home via the gardner, Barnaby Bear, Frisky Fox and more. Perfect of the whole family.

The night before christmas book

The Night Before Christmas an absolute classic by Clement C. Moore and available in many different guises. We have this one illustrated by Robert Ingpen. It has particularly large text so is perfect for the children to get involved and try to read it themselves.

Madeline Christmas book

by Ludwig Bemelmans – ‘In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines…’ Harriet loves the Madeline stories and this one based at the boarding house in Paris on Christmas Eve is no exception.

mog xmas2
Mog’s Christmas Calamity by Judith Kerr – If you haven’t yet seen the Sainsbury’s Christmas advert then do go and search for it. Heartwarming and delightful, can Mog save Christmas? We couldn’t resist this adorable book, especially considering all the profits made by Judith Kerr, HarperCollins and Sainsbury’s from sales of the new book will be donated to Save the Children to improve child literacy in the UK.

And some others that we love to help you get to 12 or 24…

Socks for Santa – this story teaches children about giving gifts as well as the excitement of santa visiting.
Winter story (Brambly Hedge series) – we both adored this series as children and now ours do too.
 – the 50th Anniversary Edition is a beautiful keepsake of a simple version of the nativity.
  – find out more about it here
Nativity Story – good for younger readers, Teddy loved the animals in them and copying the sounds they make.

So get your Christmas wrapping paper ready and off you go… A nice way to label each book in your Christmas Book Advent could be with these fabulous Glittery numbered tags from With Love from Josie that we recently discovered – the perfect way to finish off the surprise we think.
